...In the United States, which leads the study of industrial organization today, the first wave of mergers occurred from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, and the second wave in the 1920s, establishing the large corporate system. In the 1930s, new developments in both theory and empirical studies were made, including the oligopoly theory of J. Robinson (The Economics of Imperfect Competition, 1933) and E. Chamberlin (The Theory of Monopolistic Competition, 1933) in the UK, and the study of the nature and importance of large corporations by AA Burley and GC Means (The Modern Corporation and Private Property, co-authored by the two, 1932). Building on this foundation, in the 1940s, economists at Harvard University, led by Edward S. Mason (1899-), applied the prototype of today's analytical framework of industrial organization, which is market structure-market behavior-market outcomes, and energetically conducted case studies of individual industries. The methodology of industrial organization was established around this time, and the credit for systematizing it is often given to Joe S. Bain (1912-).
