A general term for two bird species in the genus Geococcyx and family Lesser Cuckoos. This species is the most adapted to life on land, and both its English and Japanese names were given to it because it runs on the ground to catch prey such as lizards. The greater roadrunner Geococcyx californianus (illustration), which is about 60 cm in length, is found from the southwestern United States to Mexico, while the lesser roadrunner G. velox , which is about 50 cm in length, is found from southern Mexico to Central America. Both species have gray-brown plumage with white and black spots above and white bellies. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
