Suppiluliuma (English spelling)
? - c. 1340 BC The fifth king of the New Hittite Kingdom. Reigned c. 1380 BC - c. 1340 BC. He spent his entire life on the battlefield, and led the New Kingdom to rank alongside the great powers of the ancient Orient, and he himself used the title of "Great King." After ascending to the throne, he attacked the neighboring kingdom of Mitanni to the southeast, and advanced into Syria, but returned home to conquer the barbarians who were causing trouble in his homeland from the mountainous region of the northern border of Asia Minor. After pacifying this area for the time being, he took advantage of the internal conflict in Mitanni to bring the country under his protection, and further added Kargamis (Carchemish in the Old Testament), a strategic location on the left bank of the Euphrates River, to his territory, but died of an epidemic while attacking the barbarians to the north who had rebelled again.
