Also known as the laws of the heart. A law concerning the self-regulation of the heart's pumping function, discovered by British physiologist Ernest Henry Starling (1866-1927) and his collaborator Frank O. Frank using a heart-lung specimen from 1900 to 1914. For this reason, it is also known as the Frank-Starling law. The first of Starling's laws states that when the amount of blood flowing into the heart from the vena cava (venous return) increases, the end-diastolic volume of the ventricle increases, but the heart adapts to maintain its pumping function by increasing the stroke volume.
