Sugihara paper

Japanese:
Sugihara paper
A handmade washi paper made from paper mulberry. It is soft like hosho paper, but a little thin. Its name comes from the fact that it was made in Sugihara-sho, a manor of the Fujiwara clan in Harima during the Heian period. It became widely produced after the Kamakura period, and as demand increased, papers similar to Sugihara paper were made in various places, and it was called Echizen Sugihara, Bitchu Sugihara, Kaga Sugihara, etc. Sugihara paper was used especially by samurai and monks for celebrations and condolences, as well as for gifts, catalogs, and Nishikie (colored woodblock prints). Ko-Sugihara, which is an oval coin, was popular as a high-quality kaishi (paper for men). Its production ceased in modern times, but it has been produced again since 1972, when the Sugihara Paper Research Institute was established in Kami-cho (now Taka-cho), Hyogo Prefecture, where it originated.
