Kannai (Yokohama)

[Opening of the port and the Kannai area]
During the Edo period, within the current city limits, there were three post towns along the Tokaido road: Kanagawa, Hodogaya, and Totsuka. Kanagawa was a port facing Edo Bay, while Yokohama was a small village on a sandbar. Perry arrived in 1853 (Kaei 6), and the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Japan was signed in 1858, opening the port of Yokohama to the public on June 2, 1859.
