Eshununna (English spelling)

An ancient city-state located around Syar in the Diyala River basin, between the Tigris and the Zagros Mountains. Today it is Tell Asmar. It was surveyed by the University of Chicago excavation team led by H. Frankfort. It developed into an independent kingdom under Ipik-Adad II around 1850 BC, and held great power until it was defeated by Hammurabi of Babylon around 1761 BC. The Code of Eshnunna was discovered at Tell Harmar (ancient name Shadhapum) near Baghdad, excavated by Iraqis in 1945 and 1949, and is said to be about 200 years older than the Code of Hammurabi. In addition, numerous figures of worshippers with large, wide-open eyes were unearthed from the Early Dynastic Temple of Abu excavated at Eshnunna.
