Toyotake Chikuzen Shojo - Toyotake Chikuzen Shojo

Toyotake Chikuzen Shojo - Toyotake Chikuzen Shojo
Year of death: November 5, 1768 (December 13, 1768)
Year of birth: Genroku 13 (1700)
A Gidayu-bushi tayuu (a chanter for the performers of Gidayu) in the mid-Edo period. He was commonly known as Kappaya Ihei because of his previous business. He made his debut at the Toyotakeza in 1733 (Kyoho 18) as a disciple of Mutsu Shigetayu. In 1737 (Genbun 2), he began performing at the Takemotoza under the name Takemoto Minotayu, and the following year he adopted the name Takemoto Konotayu. After the death of Takemoto Harimashojo in 1744 (Enkyo 1), he played a central role at the Takemotoza, performing the third act in "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami" and "Yoshitsune Senbonzakura," and the ninth act in "Kanadehon Chushingura." During a performance in 1748 (Kan'en 1), a clash occurred between Konotayu and puppeteer Yoshida Bunzaburo over differences in staging, leading to the so-called "Chushingura Incident" in which Konotayu left the Takemotoza along with Shimatayu and two others. Konodayu moved to the Toyotakeza Theatre and changed his name to Toyotake Konodayu, and the following year he received the title Toyotake Chikuzen Shojo Fujiwara Tamemasa, and mainly performed the sandanmekiri plays of the Toyotakeza Theatre in the first half of the Horeki period. In December 1751 (the 1st year of the Horeki era), he performed the sandanmekiri "Kumagaya Jin'ya no Dan" in "Ichinotani no Tsurugunki," which premiered at the Toyotakeza Theatre, and was a huge hit. It is said that he tried to convey a flashy feeling even in a quiet, low-pitched voice, and this style is still known today as the "Chikuzen style." He retired in 1777, and thereafter devoted himself to training the next generation.
