Japanese: イソツツジ - いそつつじ

An evergreen shrub of the Ericaceae family that grows in high moors (illustration). In summer, small white flowers bloom densely at the ends of the branches. Many branches separate from the lower part to form a spreading clump that grows to a height of 30-100 cm. Young branches are densely covered with long reddish-brown hairs. The leaves are alternate, have short stalks, are narrow lanceolate, 3-5 cm long and 5-10 mm wide, and are leathery with edges that tend to turn down on the underside, and are densely covered with long white and brown hairs on the underside. Corymbs grow at the ends of the branches. The flowers are about 1 cm in diameter and have five separate petals arranged in radial symmetry.
