A famous porcelain painter of Meissen porcelain. Born in Jena, Germany, he was blessed with artistic talent from a young age and trained in miniature painting, etching, and enamel painting from an early age. In 1720, he was invited to work as a painter at the Royal Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, and three years later he became court painter, and in 1731 he was appointed artistic director of the Meissen manufactory. He initially excelled in chinoiserie (Chinese-style) painting, but later established a new style of Meissen porcelain painting by depicting European rural landscapes and flowers, and contributed to the development of the early Meissen manufactory alongside the sculptor Kändler.

マイセン磁器の著名な陶画家。ドイツのイェーナに生まれ，年少のころより画才に恵まれ，早くから細密画，エッチング，エナメル画法の修業を積んだ。1720年王立マイセン磁器製作所の絵付師として招かれ，3年後には宮廷画家となり，31年にはマイセン窯の美術総監督に任ぜられた。彼ははじめシノアズリー(中国風)の絵付けに健筆をふるったが，後にはヨーロッパの田園風景や草花を描くことによってマイセン磁器の絵付けに新たな様式を確立，陶彫家のケンドラーと並んで初期マイセン窯の発展につくした。
