Reader - Dokushi
〘Noun〙 (also "tokushi", "tokuji", "touji" or "dokuji")① Buddhist term. In the ancient and middle ages, a priest was placed at each provincial temple in each province along with a lecturer. One rank lower than a lecturer. Term of office was six years. [Sandaikyaku-3, December 25, 805]② Buddhist term. During ceremonies such as the Vimalakirti and Saisho-e, a monk whose role is to stand on the high throne in front of the Buddha facing the lecturer and recite the sutra title and text. ※Shoku Nihongi - October Hei-in, 737, 9th year of Tenpyo (737), "A lecture on the Golden Light King Sutra in the Daigokuden hall. (Omitted ) Please make the monk Doji a lecturer and the treasurer a reader ."③ At poetry or composition gatherings, the person who organizes the pocket papers and short strips of paper, determines their rank, and hands them to the lecturer according to the order of their turn. When the teacher could not read the poem, he would read it to teach the students.
