An isthmus in southeastern Mexico. It is sandwiched between the Bay of Campeche on the Gulf of Mexico to the north and the Bay of Tehuantepec on the Pacific Ocean to the south, and is about 220 km wide at its narrowest point. In the south there is a wide plateau-like mountain range that continues from the Southern Madre Mountains to the west, but in the north there is a lowland marsh covered in dense forest. It has long been an important route for north-south transportation, but was rejected as a site for the construction of a canal because the construction costs were too high. Currently, there is a railroad and road between Coatzacoalcos on the shores of Campeche and Salina Cruz on the shores of Tehuantepec.
