This is the largest group of sueki kiln sites in Japan, spread across the hilly areas of Sakai, Izumi, and Kishiwada cities in Osaka Prefecture, and Sayama city in Osaka. More than 1,000 kiln sites have been confirmed. Production began in the first half of the 5th century, reached its peak in the 5th and 6th centuries, and declined after the 8th century. Excavations conducted since 1961 have established a national standard for the chronology of sueki from the Kofun period, and have shed light on sueki production techniques, kiln structure, and product distribution.
