A land ownership and taxation system introduced by the British in 1793, mainly in northern India. Zamindar (Persian) means landowner. The social classes referred to by this word were not uniform, ranging from local feudal lords to small village landowners. However, all of these were collectively defined as "landlords" and given exclusive rights in order to ensure land taxes. This destroyed the traditional relationship between landlords and farmers, gave birth to many tenant farmers, and made land an object of speculation. →Raiyatwari system Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
ザミーンダールzamindar(ペルシア語)は土地所有者の意。
