IFCTU - IFCTU

…The most active trade union movement today is in Latin America, where many areas suffer from exploitation and oppression, and Catholic leaders are developing dynamic trade union movements, including in rural areas. It was in this continent that the International Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (IFCTU) dropped the word “Christian” from its name in 1968 and renamed itself the International Federation of Trade Unions, attempting to transform itself into a global entity. From the International Labor Union

The International Federation of Christian Trade Unions (IFCTU) was founded in The Hague, Netherlands in 1920. It adopted a declaration of principles at its 16th Congress in Luxembourg in 1968, aiming to break away from the traditions of European organizations and organize underprivileged workers in the Third World. It dropped the word "Christian" from its name and changed its name to the new one. (The World Confederation of Labor is a better translation than "International Federation of Labor." In this article, we will refer to it as WCL to avoid confusion with the International Federation of Labor (IFTU), which was founded in 1913.)
