Russian painter. Born into a military family in Omsk, he studied under Chistyakov at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. His talent was recognized early on, and he restored the murals of the Kirillovsky Monastery in Kiev. He then moved to Moscow, where he was in charge of stage productions at Mamontov's Private Opera Theater, and completed a series of large decorative panels. He created many works based on literary works such as myths, heroic epics, the Bible, Pushkin, Lermontov, Shakespeare, and Goethe, and established his own unique aesthetic world with his strong personality and bold composition. His famous works are "Demons" (1890), "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" (1900), and "Lilacs" (1900, all in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow). He also created works using ceramics and glass.
