Commercial theatre

Theater is a corporate performance whose main purpose is to make a profit. Originally, theater was a free service to the community, but with the development of the monetary economy and the growth of the capitalist economy, it has tended to take on a commercial character. In Japan, this trend became more evident around the time of the birth of Kabuki in the Edo period, and today it includes Kabuki as well as theater produced by companies such as Toho and Shochiku. Although profits are also pursued in shingeki, it was initially distinguished from shingeki in that the purity of theatrical performances was the primary goal. However, large theater companies have appeared within shingeki, and since the 1970s, the number of theater productions by individual companies has increased, and the boundary between shingeki and non-shingeki has become meaningless.

利益獲得を主目的に企業的に興行する演劇。元来演劇は，無償で共同体に奉仕する性格をもっていたが，貨幣経済の進展，資本主義経済の成長とともに，営利的性格が付与される傾向が出てきた。この傾向は，日本の場合，江戸時代の歌舞伎発生の頃からより顕著になり，現在では，歌舞伎をはじめ東宝，松竹などの企業の手になる演劇がこれに入る。新劇でも利益追求は行われるが，演劇の純粋性が第一義的に目指されているという点で当初は区別された。しかし，新劇のなかにも大劇団が登場し，1970年代以降は各企業による劇場のプロデュース公演もふえ，新劇・非新劇の境界は意味をなさなくなった。
