Gabo, Naum
Born: August 5, 1890, Bryansk
[Died] August 23, 1977. Waterbury, Connecticut. American sculptor born in Russia. Real name Naum Neemia Pevsner. Younger brother of sculptor Pevsner. Studied medicine and natural sciences in Munich in 1910. Met Kandinsky in 1912. At the outbreak of World War I, he fled to Oslo, and in 1915 produced his first sculpture using Cubist techniques. In 1917, he returned to Russia with his brother and participated in the Constructivist movement in Moscow. In 1920, he and his brother published the Realist Manifesto, which became more political. He later criticized Constructivism and moved to Berlin in 1922. From 1926 to 1927, he designed the stage sets for S. Diaghilev's ballet company, and from 1932 to 1935, he participated in the Abstraction Création group in Paris. In 1935, he moved to London and worked as an editor for the magazine Circle. In 1957, he completed a huge monumental sculpture for the Bijenkorf Building in Rotterdam. His abstract sculptures, which aimed for spatial composition using new materials such as metal plates, plastic, and nylon, left a significant mark on contemporary sculpture. His representative works include "Column" (1923, Museum of Modern Art, New York) and "Spiral Theme" (41, Guggenheim Museum).
