Ruhr Coalfields - Ruhr Kohlenfeld

Germany's largest coalfield spreads across the Ruhr basin, a tributary of the Rhine on the right bank. It covers an area of approximately 6,200 square kilometers. The coal-bearing layers are Upper Carboniferous strata of the Paleozoic Era, containing numerous coal seams with thicknesses of 0.5 to 2.8 meters, and are endowed with a folded structure with an east-west axis. The total amount of coal reserves is said to be several tens of billions of tons. The coalfield produces coking coal and general purpose coal in a ratio of 7 to 3. It is well known that with the passage of the so-called Coal Bill in 1968, 24 mining companies in the coalfield merged to form one company, the Ruhr Coal Company, and began the rational development of the coalfield. The annual coal production is 40.73 million tons (1998).
