A herbaceous or shrub of the genus Ruellia in the family Acanthaceae, with about 200 species found in temperate and tropical regions. The entire plant is covered with soft hairs, and the leaves are opposite, usually entire but sometimes toothed. The flowers are white, peach, violet, purple, etc., and grow in clusters in the bract axils or in panicles, but may also grow solitary. Species with beautiful leaves are cultivated as ornamental plants, and some species also have beautiful flowers. キツネノマゴ科ルエリア属Ruelliaの草本もしくは低木で,温帯と熱帯地方に約200種を産する。株は全体が柔らかい毛につつまれ,葉は対生し,通常は全縁であるが,ときに歯牙がある。花は白,桃,すみれ,紫色などで,苞腋(ほうえき)に叢生(そうせい)するか円錐花序につくが,単生状態となることもある。葉の美しい種が観葉植物として栽培され,また花の美しいものもある。 ルエリア・アモエナR.amoena Neesはブラジル原産の小低木状で,高さは50~60cmとなり,よく分枝する。
