A primitive type of deer that has no antlers and has fang-like upper canines. A general term for mammals of the Tragulidae family in the even-toed ungulate order. Also called mouse deer. Two genera and four species are found in western and central Africa and in central and southeastern Asia. Body length is 40-85 cm, tail length is 2.5-15 cm, shoulder height is 20-36 cm, and weight is 1.7-15 kg. The body is stocky, with a rounded back and high waist. The limbs are thin and have four fingers, but only the two middle fingers (the third and fourth fingers) touch the ground; the other fingers (the lateral fingers) are small and do not touch the ground.

角がなく上の犬歯がきば状に発達する原始的なシカの仲間。偶蹄目マメジカ科Tragulidaeの哺乳類の総称。ネズミジカともいう。アフリカ西部と中部およびアジアの中南部と南東部に2属4種が分布する。体長40~85cm,尾長2.5~15cm,肩高20~36cm,体重1.7~15kg。体はずんぐりとしており,背が丸く,腰が高い。四肢は細く4指があるが,地に着くのは中央の2本(第3,4指)だけで,他の指(側指)は小さく接地しない。
