A county is a unit of local government found in the United Kingdom and its former colonies. It was a continental name for the shire, which existed before the Norman Conquest in 1066. In this case, the continuity of the system from the Anglo-Saxon period was recognized. Usually, the name of the most important city (state capital) in the state is used as the county name. However, since 1974, a major reform of local government units has taken place, and some traditional counties have disappeared. This county system is used in many countries colonized by the British, including the United States.

英国および旧イギリス領植民地にみられる地方行政の単位，州。1066年のノルマン人の征服（ノルマン・コンクエスト）以前から存在していたシャイア（シャー）shireを大陸風に改名したもの。その際アングロ・サクソン以来の制度的な連続性が認められた。通常その州の有力な都市（州都）の名を州名にする場合が多い。ただし1974年以降大幅な地方行政単位の改革が行われたため，伝統的なカウンティがいくつか消滅した。このカウンティ制度は，アメリカ合衆国をはじめ英国人が植民した多くの国で採用されている。
