A type of colonial cyanobacteria that is a few centimeters long, slightly flattened, and irregular in shape. It grows in springs and the bottoms of ponds and streams in Kumamoto and Fukuoka prefectures in the Kyushu region. The product is sold commercially under the names Suizenji moss and Jusen moss, and is edible. The colonies are a somewhat hard agar-like substance, and when crushed and viewed under a microscope, they are found to contain numerous elliptical, dark green cells measuring 3.5-4.0 μm x 6-7 μm. This alga was first given the scientific name Phylloderma sacrum Suringar as a new genus and species by WFR Suringar (1872-74), but the name was later changed to the above in 1953, as there was no reason to make it a separate genus from Aphanothece .
