1797‐1864 Greek general. Born as the son of an al-Matri (self-defense mercenary) in central Greece. During the Greek War of Independence, he fought against the Egyptian army of Ibrahim Pasha, then defeated the siege of the Acropolis by Kutahya Pasha, and was appointed administrator of the Peloponnese (1828). In 1851, he was sentenced to death for conspiring against King Ottoman I, but was pardoned the following year. His Memoirs vividly and objectively describes the lives of the Greek people.
