An ethnic group living in the central Caucasus, constituting the Republic of North Ossetia in the Russian Federation and the Autonomous Oblast of South Ossetia in the Republic of Georgia. In Russian they are called Ossetins, and call themselves Yilon or Digoron. Population 598,000 (1989). They speak the Iranian-based Ossetian language, and are linguistically the descendants of Scythians, Sarmatians, Alans, and other peoples, but in terms of culture and racial traits they have been strongly influenced by the surrounding Caucasian peoples. In the 13th century they established a state in the Kuma River basin, but their capital, Magas, was reduced to ashes during an attack by the Mongols.
