Wood vinegar

Aqueous solution obtained by the dry distillation of wood. It is separated from the wood tar that also distills by leaving it or distilling it. It contains acetic acid, methanol, acetone, formic acid, etc. When neutralized with milk of lime and distilled, methanol and acetone are distilled out, and acetic acid is obtained as a calcium salt.
