…Of these, the first two do not have any particular myths, so the word Gorgon often refers immediately to Medusa. They are fearsome creatures with hair made of countless snakes, teeth like boars, and eyes that turn people to stone. Their lair, said to be far to the west near the Garden of the Hesperides, was guarded by their three older sisters, the Graiai, who were born old and shared one eye and one tooth. For this reason, the hero Perseus, who was ordered to retrieve the head of the Gorgon, first stole the Graiai's eyes to find out the way to the Gorgons' lair, and then, relying on his reflection in a mirror to approach the sleeping Gorgons so that he would not look directly into their eyes and be turned to stone, he cut off the head of Medusa, the only one of the three sisters who was not immortal. …
