Frog Stone

...Frogs are closely related to agricultural rituals, as seen in the "Frog Jump" ceremony at Yoshino Zaodo, the belief that frogs are the gods of the fields and attendants of scarecrows, and memorial services for dead frogs held after the autumn harvest. In honor of frogs' ability to predict rain, people called stones that resemble frogs "frog stones" and used them to pray for rain, and in association with frogs' large eyes, people prayed to these stones for the cure of eye diseases. The Edo period essay "Shokoku Satojindan" introduces a "frog stone" from Settsu that is said to kill birds and insects, and this seems to be a type of killing stone. ...

…吉野蔵王堂の〈蛙とび〉の行事をはじめ，カエルを田の神であるかかしの従者と考えたり，秋の収穫後死んだカエルの供養をしたりするなど，農耕儀礼とカエルとの関係は深い。カエルの降雨予知の力にあやかって，カエルの形に似た石を〈蛙石〉と称して雨乞いをしたり，カエルの大きな眼から連想して眼病の治癒をこの石に祈願したりした。江戸時代の随筆《諸国里人談》には鳥虫を殺すという摂津の〈蛙石〉が紹介されているが，これは殺生石の類らしい。…
