Blouse - Burausu (English spelling) blouse

A loose-fitting top for women and girls that is waist-length or longer. It can be worn with or without a collar or sleeves, and can be worn tucked in (or under) under a skirt or trousers, over (over) or in-or-out (both). The modern concept of a blouse was established in the late 19th century, when a shirt-like top worn by Italian General Garibaldi, who led the Red Shirts, became popular among women in 1860. In 1876, the term "blouse" appeared in England, and with the popularity of tailored suits for women in the 1880s, it became established as something worn under a top. In the United States, a similar type of garment appeared in the 1870s as a waistcoat. Today, it is a practical garment that is widely used throughout the four seasons, from casual wear to sportswear, fashionable wear, and formal attire.

It also refers to loose-fitting workwear similar to a shirt or smock. It is knee-length and usually belted at the waist. It is mainly worn by European laborers, but also by painters and farmers. In the United States military, the single-breasted suit-style jacket worn instead of a coat and the jumper worn by sailors are also sometimes called blouses.

婦人・女児用の、腰丈、あるいはそれより長めのゆったりした上衣。襟、袖(そで)の有無ともにあるが、着方によって裾(すそ)をスカートやズボンの下に入れるタックイン（またはアンダー）、上に出して着るオーバー、その両方に着られるイン・オア・アウトなどに分けられる。今日的なブラウスの概念が確立したのは19世紀後半で、1860年赤シャツ隊を率いたイタリアの将軍ガリバルディが着用していたシャツ風の上衣が女性の人気を博し、76年にはイギリスにブラウスの呼称が出現、80年代の女性のテーラード・スーツの普及で、その上着の下に着るものとして定着するに至った。アメリカでは同形のものが、ウエストコートとして1870年代に現れている。今日では四季を通じて、普段着からスポーツ着、おしゃれ着、正装用などとして、幅広く用いられる実用的な衣服の一つとなっている。

　このほか、シャツやスモックに似た、ゆったりした仕事着のこともいう。膝(ひざ)までの長さがあり、腰でベルトを締めるのが普通。主としてヨーロッパの労働者が着るほか、画家や農夫が着用する。また、アメリカの軍隊の制服で、コートがわりに着るシングルの打合せの背広形のジャケットや、水兵の着るジャンパーをブラウスとよぶこともある。
