Special Fisheries Survey

Japanese: 水産事項特別調査 - すいさんじこうとくべつちょうさ

Until the mid-1880s, the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce's statistical tables provided only immature fisheries statistics that barely captured anything other than marine products, but in November 1892 (Meiji 25), it issued Directive No. 33, ordering prefectures to carry out special surveys of fisheries. This was a one-time survey to grasp the state of affairs in 1891, but it was a groundbreaking large-scale survey in the prewar period. The results of this survey were published in a large volume titled "Special Survey of Fisheries" (March 1894), covering important matters relating to fisheries production, processing, and distribution of marine products.

明治20年代半ばまでの農商務統計表では，水産製造物以外はほとんどとらえていない未熟な水産統計しか示されていなかったが，農商務省は1892年(明治25)11月に訓令第33号を布達し，道府県に命じて水産事項特別調査を実施させた。これは1891年の状態を把握した一回限りの調査であるが，戦前においては画期的大調査であった。その調査結果は《水産事項特別調査》(1894年3月刊)という大冊で刊行され，漁業生産，水産加工，水産物流通にかかわる重要事項が網羅されている。
