The Shinpūren Rebellion

Japanese: 神風連の乱 - しんぷうれんのらん
The Shinpūren Rebellion

On October 24, 1876 (Meiji 9), conservative samurai rebelled in Kumamoto against the government's open-minded policies. One of the samurai rebellions. The Shinpuren (also called the Keishinto) was formed in 1872 when conservative and anti-foreigner factions split off from the Higo Kinnoto. Since then, they had been waiting for an opportunity to launch an anti-government uprising, deciding their actions based on divine will (ukehi), but when the sword ban order was issued in March 1876, the party members became enraged, and finally received divine will to rise up on October 24 of the same year. At dawn on that day, 170 men led by Otaguro Tomoo and Kaya Harukata attacked the Kumamoto garrison, the prefectural governor's house, and the prefectural assembly chairman's house, killing the garrison commander Taneda Masaaki, the prefectural governor Yasuoka Yoshisuke, and others. However, the garrison soldiers counterattacked, and Otaguro, Kaya, and others were killed in battle. 86 men committed suicide on the top of Mount Kinpo, and the rest were captured, and the rebellion was put down on the following day, the 25th.
