Born July 7, 1868 in Fairfield, Maine. Died June 14, 1924. Montclair, New Jersey. American engineer and management consultant. Developed the motion study method of scientific management, a technique typified by F.W. Taylor. Graduated from Boston Elementary and Middle School. He was accepted into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but chose to pursue a practical career, working as a bricklayer and site supervisor before becoming an independent builder. During this time he began researching the motions of bricklaying work, and invented "micromotion study," which further developed Taylor's stopwatch-based work study (motion and time study), and the serve rig, which divided the work into 18 basic movements, laying the foundations for scientific work management. From 1912 onwards he devoted himself to research. His wife, Lillian Mohler, a psychologist, also supported him, and made a great contribution to the study of work psychology. His major works include "Bricklaying System" (1909), "Motion Study" (11), and "Primer of Scientific Management" (11). He also co-authored with his wife "Time Study" (16), "Fatigue Study" (16), "Applied Motion Study" (17), and "Motion Study for the Handicapped" (19).
