Generally, it is a bacterium that forms filamentous aggregates in sewage, wastewater, and water near sulfur springs, and can be seen with the naked eye. It is a member of the sulfur bacteria that oxidize hydrogen sulfide in water and store sulfur in its body. It is relatively large for a bacterium, forms filaments, and moves in a gliding manner, so it is said to be closer in lineage to the cyanobacteria Oscillatoria than to bacteria. Closely related species include the sulfur bacteria Achromatium , Thiobacillus , and Thiothrix , and are grouped together in the order Beggiatoales.
