Plectocomia

Japanese: Plectocomia
Plectocomia

…About 500 species of rattan are found in tropical Asia and northern Australia (and some in Africa and South America), with Malaysia being the most differentiated and developed. Of these, the stalks of the Asian genera Geranium (about 100 species), Calophyllum (about 375 species), Korthalsia (35 species), Plectocomia (6 species), and Ceratolobus (5 species) are smoothed and the thorns are removed for use in rattan crafts, but the quality and uses vary widely depending on the species. The red resin secreted from between the scales of the fruits of the Sumatran Daemonorops draco Bl., D. kurzianus Hook.f., and D. propinquus Becc. is called Kirinketsu (East Indian dragon's blood or dragon's blood) and is used to make furniture varnish, to color toothpaste and drinking water, and for medicinal purposes.
