A city on the west bank of the mouth of the Kakogawa River in southern Hyogo Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It developed as a rice distribution center for the Himeji domain and a port town on the inland sea route. After the opening of the Takasago Line (closed in 1984) and the Sanyo Electric Railway, paper and spinning factories moved into the reclaimed coastal land, and in the Showa era, large factories for ceramics, machinery, chemicals, food, steel, and other industries moved in. It became one of the centers of the Harima-Nada coastal industrial zone, and its population has been rapidly increasing. The Aioi Pine at Takasago Shrine is famous. 兵庫県南部,加古川河口の西岸の市。1954年市制。姫路藩の米集散地,内海航路の港町として発達。高砂線(1984年廃線),山陽電鉄の開通後,臨海干拓地を中心に製紙,紡績の工場,昭和に入ると窯業,機械,化学,食品,鉄鋼などの大工場が進出,播磨(はりま)灘臨海工業地帯の一中心をなし,人口も急増している。高砂神社の相生(あいおい)の松は有名。山陽本線が通じる。34.38km2。9万3901人(2010)。
