Ammonium amalgam

A spongy solid with a metallic luster is obtained by adding a concentrated solution of ammonium chloride to sodium amalgam or by electrolyzing a liquid ammonia solution of ammonium salts with mercury as the cathode. It is thought that the ammonium group _NH4 forms the amalgam in the same way as alkali metals. However, attempts to isolate the _NH4 group as a free radical from this amalgam have not yet been successful. It is extremely unstable, and immediately swells up even at room temperature, evolving ammonia and hydrogen and liberating mercury as it decomposes.

ナトリウムアマルガムに塩化アンモニウムの濃溶液を加えるか，アンモニウム塩の液体アンモニア溶液を水銀を陰極として電気分解すると得られる，金属光沢をもった海綿状の固体。アンモニウム基NH₄がアルカリ金属と同じようにアマルガムになったものと考えられている。しかし，このアマルガムからNH₄基を遊離基として単離する試みはまだ成功していない。きわめて不安定で，室温でもただちに大きく膨れあがり，アンモニア，水素を発生し，水銀を遊離して分解する。
