Ogi

Japanese: 小木 - おぎ
Ogi
This is the former town area at the southern end of Sado City in the west of Niigata Prefecture. It is located at the southern tip of Sado Island. It was incorporated as a town in 1889. In 2004, it merged with Ryotsu City and one other city, six towns, and two villages to form Sado City. Ogi, the central settlement, was a small fishing village, but as the development of the Sado mines progressed, it was designated as Kotsu (a port for exporting gold) during the Keicho period, and developed rapidly after the Ogi Guardhouse was established. In the early modern period, it gained importance as a port for waiting for favorable winds on the westward route. After the Meiji period, Ryotsu Port in the northeast became the main gateway to Sado, and today it is connected by ferry to Naoetsu in Joetsu City. This is a tourist destination in southern Sado, centered on Rengehoji Temple, which has the Kobo-do and Kondo halls that are nationally important cultural properties, Ogi Coast, a national scenic spot and natural monument, Chojagahira ruins from the Jomon period (nationally designated historic site), and the Ogi Marine Park area. Ogi's Gosho cherry blossoms are a national natural monument. The area belongs to Osado Prefectural Natural Park and Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park.
