Basidiomycetes, order Acarinales, family Coprinus. Grows in fertilized grasslands and fields from summer to autumn. The fruiting body cap is 2-3 cm in diameter, hemispherical or bell-shaped, rounded and mounded. The stalk is 2-5 mm in diameter, 4-8 cm long, slender, tough, hollow, and easily torn. The surface of the cap is hairless, gray when wet, and yellowish brown or straw colored when dry. The center is slightly reddish. The stalk is white or the same color as the cap, but the base is brown. The cap of this mushroom has a tendency to tear easily from its edge. The folds on the underside of the cap are initially colorless, but turn black as the spores ripen and emerge. The spore print is black. It is widely distributed from Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as Europe, North America, Australia, and Siberia. It is said that if this mushroom is accidentally eaten, the nerves become abnormally excited, causing symptoms of poisoning such as incessant laughter and sleepwalking. The poisonous components are unknown.

担子菌類マツタケ目ヒトヨタケ科。夏から秋に，肥料を与えた草原や畑地などに生える。子実体の傘は直径2～3cm，半球形または鐘状の丸山形。柄は直径2～5mm，長さ4～8cmで細長く，強靭で中空，裂けやすい。傘の表面は無毛，湿ったときは灰色，乾くと黄褐色またはわら色になる。中央はやや赤みを帯びている。柄の色は白色または傘と同じであるが基部は褐色となる。なおこのキノコの傘にはその縁から裂けやすい性質がある。傘の裏面のひだは初め無色，胞子が熟して出てくるに従って黒くなる。胞子紋は黒色。日本の本州から北海道およびヨーロッパ，北アメリカ，オーストラリア，シベリアなどに広く分布する。このキノコを誤って食べると神経が異常に興奮して，笑いが止らなかったり，夢遊病のような状態になったりする中毒症状を起すという。その毒成分などは未知である。
