Brown Hawk Owl (Green Leaf Wood Rabbit) - Brown Hawk Owl (English spelling)
A bird of the order Strigiformes and family Strigidae (illustration). It migrates to Japan in April and May when the leaves begin to grow green, and often cries "hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo" near residential areas, hence the name. It is widely distributed in eastern and southern Asia, and migrates to Japan as a summer bird to breed. It is a common species among Japanese owls. It is about 30 cm long. Its whole body is black-brown, with several white vertical stripes from its chest to its belly. It mainly hunts for flying insects at night, either in the upper part of the forest or at the edge of the forest. When doing so, it always catches its prey with its toes, never using its beak.
