Mosaic Eggs

This refers to an animal egg in which it is thought that which parts of the egg will become which parts of the body in the future are determined very early on, and that these parts are arranged like a mosaic. This concept is in contrast to an egg in which the fate of each part of the egg is thought to be determined gradually in relation to its surroundings, i.e. a regulated egg. In a mosaic egg, the blastomeres separated at the early stage of cleavage only give rise to limited parts and organs of the body. In contrast, in a regulated egg, the separated blastomeres are small but can give rise to a complete body. In the past, there was a big issue over the mechanism that determines the developmental fate of each part during animal embryo development, as to whether an egg was a mosaic egg or a regulated egg. However, the term mosaic egg is now used to mean an egg in which the developmental fate of each part of the egg is determined relatively early, rather than an egg with special properties regarding the determination of developmental fate.

動物の卵のうち、卵のどの部分が将来、体のどの部分になるかが非常に早くから決定され、それらの各部分がモザイクのように配置されていると考えられる卵をいう。卵の各部分の運命が周囲との関連において徐々に決められると考えられる卵、すなわち調節卵に対する概念である。モザイク卵では卵割初期に分離された割球は、体のある限られた部分、器官しかつくらない。これに対し調節卵では、分離された割球は小さいながらも完全な体をつくることができる。かつては、動物の胚(はい)発生における各部分の発生運命の決定の機構をめぐって、卵がモザイク卵であるか、調節卵であるかが大問題であった。しかし現在ではモザイク卵は、発生運命の決定に関して特別な性質をもつ卵というより、卵の各部分の発生運命が比較的早くから決定されている卵、という意味で使われている。
