Takamasa Mitani

Educator and philosopher. Born in Kanagawa Prefecture. After graduating from the First Higher School, he graduated from the Faculty of Law, Tokyo Imperial University. He taught law and German as a professor at the Sixth Higher School, Shizuoka Higher School, First Higher School and other former high schools. Influenced by Nitobe Inazo and Uchimura Kanzo, he converted to Christianity while in high school, and throughout his life he taught students with a sense of mission based on his deep faith. From the standpoint of a believer, he particularly studied Augustine, and left behind works on theology and philosophy, which are included in the Collected Works of Mitani Takamasa.

教育者、哲学者。神奈川県生まれ。第一高等学校を経て、東京帝国大学法科大学を卒業。第六高等学校を皮切りに、静岡高等学校、第一高等学校など旧制高等学校の教授として、法制およびドイツ語を教えた。高等学校時代から新渡戸稲造(にとべいなぞう)、内村鑑三(うちむらかんぞう)の影響のもと、キリスト教に入信、生涯その深い信仰に基づく使命感によって、学生を指導した。信仰者の立場から、とくにアウグスティヌスを研究して、神学、哲学に関する著作を残し、『三谷隆正全集』に収められている。
