Devotion - Kie

To devote oneself to and take refuge in something superior. Also called 'kimyo', it means to devote one's body and mind to something with faith and obedience. To rely on something with absolute faith. Synonymous with 'faith', taking refuge in the three treasures of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha is called the 'three refuges', which are the most basic expression of Buddhist faith. In Jodo Shinshu, the 'ki' in 'refuge' is interpreted as 'kimyo', which means to devote oneself to and take possession of the power of Amida Buddha's vows, and this is said to be nothing other than faith.

優れたものに帰投し、伏依すること。また帰命(きみょう)ともいい、自己の身心を捧(ささ)げて信順すること。絶対の信をもってよりどころとすること。信仰と同意で、仏・法・僧の三宝に帰依することを三帰依といい、これは仏教徒の信仰を示すもっとも基本的なものとなっている。浄土真宗では帰依の「帰」を帰投と解して、阿弥陀仏(あみだぶつ)の願力に帰投し依憑(えひょう)することであるとし、これが信心にほかならないとしている。
