In Greek mythology, it was the food of the gods. The etymology of the word means "immortality." Usually, the drink is called nektar, but sometimes the two are treated indifferently, and ambrosia is considered a drink. Originally, it was the exclusive property of the gods, but mortals, such as Tantalus, sometimes received it as a special blessing. It was also used as an ointment with the power to grant immortality, and the hero Achilles became immortal except for the tendons that were not applied.
