A former town in Kamiminochi County in northern Nagano Prefecture. It is located in the middle reaches of the Sai River, bordering the west of Nagano City. Fruit and vegetable cultivation, and sericulture are carried out. Shinmachi, in the center of the town, was an important location for shipping on the Sai River before the railway was opened. National Route 19 runs through the town. Many people commute to Nagano City. In January 2010, it was incorporated into Nagano City along with Nakajo Village in Kamiminochi County. 70.73 km2 . 長野県北部，上水内(かみみのち)郡の旧町。犀(さい)川中流部にあり，長野市の西に接する。果樹・野菜栽培，養蚕が行われる。中心の新町は鉄道開通前の犀川舟運の要地。国道19号線が通じる。長野市への通勤者も多い。2010年１月上水内郡中条村と長野市へ編入。70.73km2。5535人（2005）。
