...The Ukrainian Republic, together with the Belarusian Republic, joined the United Nations at the same time as its establishment, a decision that was made at the Yalta Conference in 1945. After Stalin's death in 1953, LG Melnikov (1906-), who had been the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Ukraine, was criticized for carrying out a mistaken policy of Russification, and was replaced by OI Kirichenko (1908-75), a Ukrainian. In 1954, the 300th anniversary of the Pereyaslav Treaty was celebrated, and the Crimean Peninsula was handed over to Ukraine from the Russian Republic.
