This refers to traveling by car without using hotels, staying in tents or simple lodging facilities while enjoying the scenery, and also to the lodging facilities. It developed in Europe and the United States after World War II, targeted at travelers who enjoyed traveling by car due to the development of automobiles. There are various types of camping, such as trailer-type camping where you pull a car with accommodation facilities, tents, one-box cars, and bungalows. Trailer-type camping is more common in Europe and the United States, but trailer-type camping is rare in Japan due to road conditions. Campsites are equipped with washrooms, baths, and cooking facilities, and many can be used by simply connecting electricity, water, and gas pipes. There are maps of campsites, and families often travel around campsites. There are about 40,000 campsites in North America and about 1,000 in Germany, and campsites are established throughout Europe and the United States. In Japan, auto campsites (mobilages) have developed since the first auto campsite was established in Hakone in 1966 (Showa 41), and thanks to the efforts of the Japan Auto Camping Association, which was established in 1969, it has become one of the main forms of family travel. As of March 2000, there were 1,239 auto campsites, with an estimated 10.2 million people using them in 2000. Ecological campsites and urban park campsites have been established, and in Hokkaido, the development of auto resorts is being promoted under the Hokkaido Auto Resort Network Project.
