Shinshu Tsumugi

Japanese: 信州紬 - しんしゅうつむぎ
Shinshu Tsumugi
A type of silk fabric. It is hand-woven tsumugi produced in 10 cities and 17 towns and villages throughout Nagano Prefecture, and is a designated traditional craft. There are Yamamayu tsumugi (wild silkworm tsumugi), Ueda tsumugi, Iida tsumugi, Ina tsumugi, Ashi tsumugi, Shike tsumugi, and Futori tsumugi. Ueda tsumugi began to be woven in the late 17th century and was known as Ueda stripes. At the end of the Edo period, there was even a feudal lord's tsumugi adjustment office. Other tsumugi producing areas had been producing since the early 18th century, and wild silkworm threads, especially Tensei silkworm threads, are highly valued. The warp threads are made of plain silk threads, dupioni threads, and hand tsumugi threads, and the weft threads are made of hand tsumugi threads, tsumugi threads, and tsumugi threads.
