A city in central Iwate Prefecture, covering a wide area of ​​the Kitakami Highlands. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Mountains make up 55% of the city area, and in the center is the Tono Basin formed by the Sarugaishi River, with the central city area developed with the Kamaishi Line running through it. In the early modern period, it developed as a castle town for the Tono Nanbu clan and a horse-producing area. Currently, the city is thriving with rice, tobacco, apples, and pears, dairy and beef cattle breeding, and woodworking. The deep mountains surrounding the basin make it a treasure trove of folklore, and it is famous for Kunio Yanagita's "The Tales of Tono." In 1992, the "World Folklore Expo in Tono" was held, and the number of tourists seeking the home of folklore is increasing. In October 2005, Miyamori Village in Kamihei District was incorporated, and the Kamaishi Expressway runs through the city. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 825.97 km 2 . 29,331 people (2010).

岩手県中部,北上高地の広い地域を占める市。1954年市制。山地が市域の55%を占め,中部に猿ヶ石川が形成した遠野盆地があり,釜石線が通じる中心市街が発達。近世には遠野南部氏の城下町,馬の産地として発展した。現在は米を中心にタバコ,リンゴ,セイヨウナシの栽培,乳牛・肉牛飼育,木工業が盛ん。盆地を囲んで山が深く,民間伝承の宝庫といわれ,柳田国男の《遠野物語》で有名。1992年には〈世界民話博IN遠野〉が開かれ,民話のふるさとを求めて観光客が増加している。2005年10月上閉伊郡宮守村を編入,釜石自動車道が通じている。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。825.97km2。2万9331人(2010)。
