〘Noun〙 A type of Chinese character pronunciation. Generally known as Tang pronunciation or Tang-Song pronunciation. This refers particularly to the pronunciation of Chinese characters from the Song and Yuan dynasties that was transmitted from the mid-Heian period through the Kamakura period. It was mainly transmitted by Zen monks, and is often used in words related to Zen Buddhism. For example, the "an" in "andon" (lantern) , the "wo" in " osho" (priest) , the "kin" in "kankyo" ( reading sutra) , and the "chu" in "tou" (pagoda) .
