Cinnabar - Shinsha

Japanese: シンシャ(辰砂) - しんしゃ
Cinnabar - Shinsha
(1) A major ore mineral of mercury. Its composition is HgS. It has a hexagonal crystal system and bright red rhombohedral crystals, but it is mostly found in lumpy or earthy form. It is soft, with a hardness of 2-2.5, a specific gravity of 8.09, and a metallic luster. It is a mineral characteristic of hydrothermal deposits, and mainly penetrates volcanic rocks in the form of veins and precipitates near the surface. The Almaden mine in Spain is the world's largest deposit, and in Japan the Itomuka mine in Hokkaido is famous. (2) Ceramics with underglaze painting using copper oxide. It is so named because it has a red color similar to the color of natural vermilion (cinnabar).
